I submitted two painting to the AAG for their Fall Exhibition and one of my pieces was accepted! I am very excited about this, it's my first juried show in Arizona. Apparently 85 artists submitted 250 pieces for consideration. I don't know how many were accepted, I'll find out at the reception November 5. This is the accepted entry: Blue Skies
Commission

I am going to be doing a painting of my cousin Joe's horse "Maria". She's a beautiful animal. I am a little intimidated since I have never done horses before, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I've got a test painting all drawn out and ready to paint. It is not the size or composition I want for the actual commission work.

As a result of prompting by my dear friend Julie, I added this background. It may or may not be what she thought I should add, but it's there none the less. I like the wishy-washyness of it, but not sure if the colors are right or if I should have been more precise and added detail to the background. Thoughts?

Well, I've been working on the red amaryllis and this is how far I've gotten. I really don't know what to do about a background. I am almost thinking about leaving it blank, but no that won't do. Any help would be appreciated. Just sign up for a free account and make a comment. I have considered sponging in a muted background, say light shade of yellow ocher. I really don't know. By the way, this photo was taken outside to get natural light, but looks like some shadows fell across it. Oh well.
A New Project

I just started this painting last week. It is an amaryllis. I did a painting like this a few years back but gave the painting to a good friend last year. Now I want one for myself. I'm doing a smaller version of the painting,a half sheet. I like how it is coming along so far. I don't know what I will do with the background yet.
My Students

These are paintings that my students did in class. The object of the lesson was to focus on the negative space, hence my sunflower painting with the crazy background. They were given the assignment to do a tree and extend the branches beyond the edges of the paper. I think they both did beautiful work. My third student also did a great job but wasn't present the day I took photos.

Well, I think I just finished this painting. I added india ink to the sunflower, stem and leaves to delineate it from the background. I'm happy with it. BUT one member of the household said the background wasn't quite done yet. Now what do I do? I've already signed the darn thing. I sent out SOS notes to my art friends asking for advice. Chime in if you have an opinion. I'm hoping my students have finished their "negative space" paintings and that I will be able to post them. Next we will tackle a new project which will include them picking their own subject matter (scarey) and they have to do 2 to 3 versions of the same subject. One abstract, one representational, one ? We'll see how that goes. I'll keep you posted.

I am working on a series of Sunflower paintings. The first one is just a quick, fun almost abstract version. This second one, not completed yet, is more representational, promises to be my favorite. This third one, is part of our class project where we are focusing on the negative space of the painting.

We are having a great time learning together. We've done several different paintings so far. We've practiced different washes and skies and now we are focusing on a negative space painting. First we drew trees, painted a variegated wash background and then the trees in postitive sense in profile. Now we are painting the negative space between the branches of the trees of a new painting. All of the students are developing their own style. Hopefully, they will allow me to post some photos of their finished work.
